Aspect Ratio vs. Print Size

Aspect ratio is the shape of an image. Print size is the physical size of the final print. They work together, but they are not the same thing.

A single aspect ratio can work across many print sizes. As long as the proportions stay the same, the image can scale up or down without distortion. When the proportions do not match, the artwork may need to be cropped or printed with extra border space.

Aspect Ratio The shape of the image
Print Size The size of the finished piece

Need help matching your file to a print size?

Use our Aspect Ratio Calculator to compare common frame sizes, image proportions, and resizing options before you print.

Use the Aspect Ratio Calculator

If your image ratio and your chosen print size do not match exactly, the artwork may need to be cropped slightly or printed with extra border space to preserve the composition.

Aspect ratio tells you the shape of the image. Print size tells you how large it will be when printed. Knowing both makes it much easier to choose the right fit before ordering or framing.
