Culver’s root isn’t one of the more recognizable plants in this series, but it feels tied to the Northeast Ohio landscape. It grows tall through the summer, showing up along roadsides and trails in a way that’s easy to overlook until you start noticing it everywhere.
I grew up on my grandmother’s property, where the land was filled with gardens. Wild roses, overflowing thyme, rows and rows of hydrangeas, and a gazebo with wisteria cascading down from the wooden pergola my grandfather built. She knew everything that grew around us. She was a walking encyclopedia, able to name nearly anything by both its scientific and common name, and quick to point out things like which plants you could crush and rub on your skin to keep the mosquitos away.
This series has become an homage to her. I still find myself wanting to send her a photo when I come across a vibrant wildflower along a trail that I can’t place, or call her from the road to ask about all the different plants blooming along the highway in the fall.
This drawing is part of a series honoring the native wildflowers of my region. I live near so many incredible trails to explore in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It’s my favorite way to recharge and reconnect with the landscape that continues to shape my work.
