Thistle Variations

While often dismissed as just a weed to pull, thistles are one of the most important plants for pollinators in this region—including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Beyond their ecological value, certain thistle species have long been used in traditional medicine for their anti-inflammatory and liver-supporting properties. In many Indigenous cultures, plants like these are respected not only for their utility but for their persistence and protective nature.

This drawing is part of a series honoring the native wildflowers of my region. I live near so many incredible trails to explore in Cuyahoga Valley National Park—it’s my favorite way to recharge and reconnect with the landscape that inspires my work.
